Don T's Story

Life Hello Knights & Ladies, Don "T" checking in, remember there were 2 Don Bryants-I am the taller one. You may remember me as the soda jerk in our term play, "I Remember Mama"-I had 2 entire lines to say and got them both out correctly! On a more serious note, since then I have had my Andy Warhol "15 minutes of fame" when I married my long time partner, Kim Barnes in the ruins of our home near Lake Temescal a month after the BIG Berkeley/Oakland hills fire of October '91. A few walls were left standing for dramatic effect, so there was a nice backdrop for the event. I spent so much time on the property just after the fire, I became a bit of a "media darling" as news crew after news crew came by , put a microphone in my face with all manor of questions. I had to promise Kim I would not alert the media regarding our wedding ceremony, but my good friend Hank Ball (January class of '58) called channel 2, so Rob Roth and crew were there,so the event made the 6 and the 10 o'clock news that Sunday evening. Also, a photograph of the ceremony was in the Oakland Tribune plus a few other papers as far away as LA. My first "3 minutes of fame" occured the Thursday after the fire when I ended up on the Peter Jennings evening show talking about a small prayer service I organized on our site to honor the 25 persons that lost their life in the blaze. I could not finish telling the story without getting all choked up, so I think that made the interview "newsworthy" enough for national TV. Kim has 2 girls, so at the wedding, I went from "batchlorhood" to "grandfatherhood" the easy way, as I don't do diapers, and we now have 4 wonderful grandchildren. We have a 15 person Management Consulting firm in Berkeley that is now 21 years in existence, and having such a good time that retirement really is not in the picture anytime soon. Frankly, the big "R" is a bit scary for both of us-would boredom set in? We travel as much as possible, and get to Europe a couple of times a year and have business...Expand for more
partners in Mexico, so we get there often also. I have lots of travel recommendations to share, especially in Italy, where we hope to buy some old restored farmhouse to ease us into "semi retirement" by going there in spring and fall. In the aftermath of the fire, we have ended up with the home of our dreams as we both enjoy architecture, design and shopping. When you lose everything, you get to do a lot of buying. We collect items from the Arts & Crafts period (1890-1925), plus I found some doors from the 16th century that are now built into the house. We had excellent insurance, so that eased the pain of suddenly having "no stuff". We did have a few great shopping sprees both here & in Europe. What I really miss now is the "old" Castlemont-as I travel & tour real castles in Europe, I realize what a gem the school was. Did you know it won a national 1st prize award for brick constructed public buildings in 1928? I have seen 2 postcards of the school taken when it was just completed-I hope to get copies and scan them into my computer so I could email them to folks that ask. My hobbies include photography, travel, going to museums wherever my travels take me, attending lectures, etc. of Arts & Crafts events, collecting early California (1900 - 1930) paintings, and finishing work on my 1947 Chevrolet woodie (even tho I never surfed back in the good 'ol days of my youth.) Speaking of my youth, I find it strange to be in the "senior" demographics, but I do enjoy the discount at the movies! I find the list of profile questions with the limited possible answers pretty "lame", they don't allow any creativity. I am very sad to report my dear sister, Beverly (class of June 57) passed away on January 10, 2005 from acute leukemia. Also, in mid March of 2007, my best friend Hank Ball passed away from throat cancer-he never had a cigarette his entire life. Sometimes life just doesn't seem fair. Please write & say "hello". I look forward to hearing from you, best wishes, Don T
